Cari colleghi e amici dell’ AIC,
Cordialmente,
Roberto Fornari

Dear friends,
in the name of IOCG I would like to express sympathy and solidarity to all French crystal growers and to the family of Raymond Kern.
The news about the death of Raymond reached me through Prof. Nishinaga when I was attending the 44th National Meeting of the Japanese Association for Crystal Growth in Tokyo. Many of the older colleagues, who knew Raymond personally, were shocked by this news, which indeed cast much sadness among the participants.
He was well known for his theoretical and experimental investigation of the crystal surface in equilibrium and off-equilibrium conditions. His enthusiastic activity continued well beyond the official limit of retirement, not only as advisor of younger colleagues but as engaged
scientist. It is just in 2013 that he published an extended review entitled “Adsorption, Absorption, versus Crystal Growth”, a kind of compendium of his scientific life.
Raymond Kern was also a leading figure at the international level: he has been member of the Executive Committee of IOCG from 1971 to 1983 and
then President during 1983-89 and again ex-Officio member of the Executive Committee for another triennium.
We shall miss him,
Roberto Fornari
